Question by Daniel: I am contemplating getting a tattoo representing my English heritage?
I am a first generation American, but my family, as far back as I can trace it (1400s) is English, and I would really like to get a tattoo which represents that, as my heritage is very important to me. One thing I am considering is the design from my Grandfather’s unit in World War Two, to commemorate him, but knowing that it is a military tattoo, and how military tattoos on non military personnel are viewed here in the states; I am a bit shaky on getting that as a tattoo. Can you think of any other particularly English designs which are respectful (for instance; I wouldn’t get a tattoo of a caricature of a typical fat man in a tailcoat sipping tea with a monocle and a bowler hat in front of the union jack, or anything of the sort; so please do not mention something distasteful, or something which you jotted down only to get the points for answering)?

This is the second time I have posted this question, as last time I didn’t get many answers, but the most of what I did were good, so I’m hoping to have as much luck a second time!

I am a first generation American, but my family, as far back as I can trace it (1400s) is English, and I would really like to get a tattoo which represents that, as my heritage is very important to me. One thing I am considering is the design from my Grandfather’s regiment in World War Two, to commemorate him, but knowing that it is a military tattoo, and how military tattoos on non military personnel are viewed here in the states; I am a bit shaky on getting that as a tattoo. Can you think of any other particularly English designs which are respectful (for instance; I would not get a tattoo of a caricature of a typical fat man in a tailcoat sipping tea with a monocle and a bowler hat in front of the union jack, or anything of the sort; so please do not mention something distasteful, or something which you jotted down only to get the points for answering)?

A few other things; I know that the Union Jack isn’t the Flag of England; I was just using that as an example of something along the lines of what not to put.
I haven’t been to England yet.
My family comes from Scarborough and Leeds

I don’t think intelligent person would mind if you explain that it is in honor of your grandfather. Isn’t some kind of family grest related to ancestors? Like a crown, or a lionand heart, or horse and sword and shield.

A tattoo. It is a Celtic Cross, with the celtic symbol for the holy spirit in the center. Over the cross it is going to say, Amore (love) and under Odio (hate). The reason is we are of Irish descent and Roman Catholic. It is supposed to symbolize our bond, not only as brother’s and friend’s but also as military men. It is my design that is based in balance, roots, and family. What do you think?

im only 14 years old, and i really want a tattoo for my 15th birthday ( i think my dad might convince me to get it on my 18th instead but he will be alright with 15th if thats what i really want) and i have an idea that i really want to go through with, i just need some second opinions on why getting it would be good or bad (whether its about the idea or side effects on the tattoo)
so my mum was diagnosed with cancer years ago and shes not expected to make it much longer. im getting help with dealing with this (people were worried with how i would deal this since im so young) and im doing fine now (she hasnt passed yet but its only a matter of time) and i would like to get a tattoo in her memory. i know this is a tattoo idea that i will never regret since it will remind me of her im just not sure about the drawbacks of getting a tattoo. also, someone very important in my life, is a friend of my mums. shes been there for me every time i’ve needed her and we’re really close so i want the tattoo i get to reflect her too
so i was thinking of getting a wolf inside a dreamcatcher, since wolves are my mums favorite animals and my mums friend is native american and makes dreamcatchers as a hobby. i would get something like this one: http://tattoo-your-body.maxupdates.tv/5-excellent-wolf-tattoo-designs/ this would represent the two most important women in my life, the ones who help me grow and find myself, and this tattoo would always remind me of two people i love and who love me. i dont know where on my body i would get this one tho, so ideas?
or my other idea is just a concept i love and respect. i thought i would get a tatoo of a crow on my left shoulder and a humming bird on my right with maybe a sun directly below my back between the two, to represent multiple things: everyone has both a good side and a bad, there are good days and bad days but the sun will always guide u where you need to go (the sun representing my mum), opposites attract, etc.
which idea do u like better? i think i like the first but i like the morals and guidelines the second one has and that it can apply to more situations.
or is getting a tattoo even a good idea at all? should i wait a few years? what are the downsides of tattoos? which idea do u like better? any other suggestions? ( i dont like tattoos with words or quotes so please dont suggest anything like that)

okay thanks guys, all the answers were really helpful.
i’ve decided im going with the wolf and dreamcatcher one, it better represents the reason i want to get the tattoo and i know i wont regret the idea of this one since its so important to me and its holds really important memories that wouldnt be able to live without.
i think ive decided to get it on my upper back between the shoulder blades (as suggested). not quite sure of the size yet, i dont want it too big but i need it to be big enough for the details to show.
also im going to wait a month or two before i decide for sure, but i think i might wait a few years (even tho it would mean more to me if i get it now :/) since i still could be growing and it might looked a little warped later on. also i asked one of my friends what she thought, which was probably a mistake , since she doesnt approve of tattoos much at all and she completely shut me down :p she said that when i get old it will look really ugly and gross soo im gunna do
* gunna do more research before i make my final desicion ( i still have a few more questions). i just want to keep in mind what will be best for me both now and in the future.

I admire your strength a lot Hun and I’m SO sorry for what your going through!! Personally I think you would regret not getting the tattoo, the one your looking at is actually the same drawing my sister did for my mum when she was going through a tough time. Get the tattoo, and show ur mum that you’ll always have a reminder of her and how much you love her. You’re such a brave person and hold onto that strength Hun. Good luck with everything. A foot tattoo can be at risk for not healing as well as it should. Since feet are usually in movement, covered with socks and stuffed in shoes it can be hard to properly heal a foot tattoo. Something that can help are make sure you don’t wear shoes for at least 12 hours after getting the tattoo and longer if possible. You might have to opt for a open sandal but the best method is to stay at home with your shoes and socks off. Try to keep the tattoo as clean as possible and wash it. Also let it breathe and get air as much as possible.

If you really want to get a foot tattoo then take your time and plan ahead. Find a design that will work well and communicate the feeling you want. Don’t rush the design process. If ur getting a Maori based tribal tatt, it must have meaning. It’s frowned upon and taken as a disrespect to get one with no meaning. If ur incorporating any Maori totems in the design it is important that u know what they stand for, eg. Mania – Spiritual protector.
